Students from different majors attended the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) Community Service Seminar organized by the School of Engineering on 12 May.

Mr Nigel MA, Planning and Development Officer, TWGHs and Ms Helen CHAN, Supervisor of Integrated Smoking Cessation Centre, TWGHs were invited to be guest speakers. Prof Roger CHENG, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies and Student Affairs of the School of Engineering, was also present.

During the seminar, Mr MA provided a comprehensive overview of TWGHs’ social services, including the history, scope, characteristics, staffing, funding and the latest developments. On the other hand, Ms CHAN focused on a new kind of social service - the smoking cessation service. Her presentation provided answers to many interesting questions, including why most smokers fail in their attempt to quit, the demographic of the smoking population in Hong Kong, as well as the correct use of smoking cessation medication. The seminar was part of the School’s community service initiatives which aim at nurturing a socially responsible culture among engineering students. The School will continue to organize more community engagement projects for this aim.
