Prof Charles Ng, Associate Dean of Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), was invited to deliver the 2010 Zeng Guoxi Lecture in Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China on 27 Nov 2010.

The Zeng Guoxi Lecture was set up in 2007 by Zhejiang University. Six distinguished lectures have been presented so far by world-renowned scholars, including two Chinese academicians, one member of Canadian Academy of Engineering, one Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the immediate Past President of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering and one Fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering, UK.

Prof Ng’s lecture is entitled “The State-of-the-Art Centrifuge Modeling of Geotechnical Problems”. His written paper for the lecture will be published on the Journal of Zhejiang University SCIENCE-A after the lecture. More details of the Lecture Series

In 2010 QS World University Rankings in Engineering and Technology, Zhejiang University is ranked No. 79 and is one of the only 5 universities from Mainland China ranked in the top 100.

40+ Distinguish Award 2010

Locally, Prof Ng was honored with the 40+ Distinguished Award 2010 by the 40+ Association on 14 November 2010.

For the first time in 2010, the Award was presented to 9 award winners, at 40 plus, for their achievements in 4 aspects - career, social, character and direction of life in their middle-age.

Head of the Judge Panel Dr John Chan Cho Chak, GBS, JP, Vice Patron of The Communist Chest and former Council Chairman of HKUST, praised, “His outstanding career achievements are the glory for Chinese.” Member of Panel Judges Dr Darwin Chen Tat Man SBS, JP, President of the HKU Space Alumni, commented, “Significant academic achievement applying his professional expertise to the advancement of the community.” Prof Ng was awarded with his outstanding achievements in his profession and the continuing social involvement in the community.

 

Personal Achievements

  1. Board Member of International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). The Third Chinese appointed to the Board since the Society’s establishment in 1936 and the first one from Hong Kong
  2. Mao Yisheng Youth Award by the Chinese Institute of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering for significant contributions in Geotechnical Engineering
  3. Changjiang Scholar (Chair Professorship) by the Ministry of Education in China
  4. Overseas Fellow, Churchill College, University of Cambridge, UK
  5. Fellow of Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences (HKAES)

Social Achievements

  1. 2007-08 President - Lions Club Metropolitan Hong Kong
  2. Convenor of the Build Environment Panel for the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE2006) of the University Grants Committee
  3. Former member of Engineering Panel of the Research Grants Council of the HKSARG

40+ Association is a non-profit organization founded in 2007. The 40+ Distinguish Awards aim to recognize people over 40 that have successful achievements in work and in social service as well as having a meaningful second half life.
