Prof Matthew McKay, Electronic and Computer Engineering, has received the 2011 IEEE Communications Society Stephen O. Rice Prize in the Field of Communications Theory for his paper “MIMO Multichannel Beamforming: SER and Outage Using New Eigenvalue Distributions of Complex Noncentral Wishart Matrices”.

This highly competitive award is given annually to the best paper published in IEEE Transactions on Communications in the previous 3 calendar years. The winning paper was co-authored by Dr Shi Jin and Prof Xiqi Gao of Southeast University, Nanjing, and Dr Iain Collings of Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, Australia.

Earlier in the year, Prof McKay and his PhD student were awarded the IEEE Signal Processing Society Young Author Best Paper Award. Prof McKay was also the awardee of the School of Engineering’s first Young Investigator Research Award in 2011.

Prof McKay’s research interests include MIMO signal processing for wireless systems, random matrix theory, as well as cooperative signaling for ad-hoc and sensor networks. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from University of Sydney in 2006.
