Monesh Govind

As a fresh secondary school graduate in Hong Kong, I was torn between my passions in language and engineering. With a leap of faith, I decided to pursue engineering at HKUST. When my mind settled, I realized that my decision would change my life forever. When I got to HKUST, I feared that I made the wrong decision because I constantly wondered what it would be like if I had taken the other path. However, I was welcomed to the School of Engineering with the utmost hospitality that it blew away my expectations. 

Aside from studying near home and family, I have made many unforgettable experiences while studying under the School of Engineering. Firstly, as a person having a strong hunger for knowledge, I have always loved to learn new things, whether it be related to my future career or not. So, when I learnt that we are not given a major in our first year because we are encouraged to have a taste in a wide variety of courses, naturally I got ecstatic. After one year of studying, I have taken a range of courses from one that is based around music history to one based around building a car. I have had so much fun learning all these new things I would have never imagined when I was younger. Moreover, I have learnt to utilize many of the facilities provided by the School of Engineering such as the Undergraduate Student-initiated Experiential Learning (USEL) Lab, Engineering Commons as well as all the wonderfully crafted labs used for a multitude of courses. These facilities are excellent grounds to nurture growth in students, as they have helped me. 

By far, my most memorable experience was joining the Engineering Student Ambassador Program. Other than the engaging interviews, we had an impactful camp that changed the way I tackled or approached many of the problems I face today. I would like to extend a warm thank you to the School of Engineering for not only welcoming me in like family, but also taking great care of me.
