“Using science to find creative and practical solutions to our problems in order to make our lives easier and better is the quintessence of Engineering”. This is something I wrote in my personal statement for HKUST. But to be really honest, I learned what engineering was all about only after coming here. Engineering is not something that can be explained in words, it is an experience – an exhilarating experience which makes you feel empowered and instils the belief that you can make a change in this world. 
  
For a confused person like me, it was really important to explore all the fields before making a decision about my major, and the flexible course structure at HKUST provided me with that opportunity. Throughout my first year, I took courses from different areas of engineering and developed my interests. Unlike high school, I did practical work in most of the courses. Whether it was making an electric car from scratch, or making an autonomous robot, or using communication devices to understand networks, I have enjoyed every single moment of my studies here. The environment in HKUST makes you want to learn more and the opportunities are abundant. The multi-cultural composition of the student body here just makes it a more wholesome experience. Talking to people from different parts of the world has helped me understand different cultures and viewpoints, and has broadened my horizon. On a side note, you might fall in love with this beautiful campus.
