The Robocon sub-team of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Robotics Team was crowned champion in the Robocon 2017 Hong Kong Contest, which is their eighth time since the competition was launched in 2004. The team will represent Hong Kong to participate in ABU Robocon 2017 which will take place in Tokyo, Japan on August 27.

Held on June 18 at Hong Kong Science Park, the Hong Kong contest attracted 12 teams from six tertiary institutions. Each institution sent two teams and the “Fiery Dragon” team of HKUST was named champion. The theme of this year’s competition is “The Landing Disc”. Each team needs to build a robot to throw flying discs at specific spots on the game field within time limit to win the game.

The multicultural Robocon team was formed by 28 undergraduates, including eight non-local students. A majority come from the School of Engineering and some from Interdisciplinary Programs Office. It is a young team of mostly Year 1 and Year 2 students and with the most female students ever.

The Robocon team has been a close-knit group with good team spirit. Not only do existing team members develop close relationships among themselves throughout the course of the competition, they also have strong ties with alumni members who have been supportive and showed up to cheer for them on the contest day.

Launched in 2002, the ABU Asia-Pacific Robot Contest (ABU Robocon) provides an international stage for engineering students in the Asia-Pacific region to showcase their robot-building skills and build lasting friendships in the process.
