Two teams comprising seven students from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) participated at the 14th IMechE Greater China Design Competition on April 15, 2026, with one team receiving the First Runner-Up Award and the other gaining the fourth place. They are supervised by Prof. Robin MA, Associate Professor of Engineering Education, and Dr. Stanley LEUNG, Teaching Associate.

Organized by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Hong Kong Branch, the competition was hosted by the MAE Department and took place at the Tsang Shiu Tim Art Hall on HKUST campus. Prof. CHEN Yong, Head and Chair Professor of the MAE Department, delivered welcome remarks at the event.

The competition brought together over 120 participants in nine teams, including industrial experts, academics, and students, from six leading institutions in the Greater Bay Area.

The 2026 design challenge focused on developing an external pipe climbing device, which is a system capable of climbing a vertical pipe while carrying an increasing load and maintaining stable attachment to the pipe surface.
