Back in the day when I was still a kid, I have always been curious about how things work and was desperate to know the secrets behind everything. To untangle these problems, I started to look up related information and found some interesting videos explaining the principles behind, and that’s the time when I first got a taste of science and technology. However, I have not yet realized engineering would be my lifelong passion at the time.

Before I got admitted to HKUST School of Engineering, I had actually been struggling with the decision of choosing which pathway I should take: science or engineering. Not until I joined HKUST Information Day did I eventually make up my mind. An impressive talk hosted by a professor from the engineering school has woken me up. During the talk, he has drawn a distinction between scientists and engineers, the former one seeks to understand the natural world, whereas the latter one design and provide solutions to problems, needs ,and wants that better the lives of humans. Being a benevolent and altruistic person, I want to dedicate my life to something that enables me to make a direct and meaningful contribution to society and human development. Therefore, I doubtlessly chose to be an engineering student after the talk.

Now, I’m striving to gain technical knowledge and practical skills in university to get well-equipped for helping to make a change to the world. Apart from the academic knowledge, HKUST also provides me diverse opportunities to develop comprehensively. The Engineering Student Ambassador (ESA) program I am currently participating in offers me a great opportunity to establish good interpersonal relationships and to learn communication skills through discussions and cooperation with other engineering students from different cultural backgrounds. I am glad to have made the decision of studying here at HKUST and be a part of the ESA community. I hope that by sharing my personal experience and making use of the practical knowledge acquired here, I can bring inspiration and innovation to other people.
