As a wide-eyed high schooler who was always drawn to maths and science, I decided early on that I wanted to pursue a career in engineering. When I began the process of applications, I realised how naïve I’d been in not realising the vastness of this field. I came to understand that I did not know how to decide my specific field of engineering and how high school had never really offered me the opportunity to explore where my interests would lie. I closed my eyes to the uncertainty that lingered in my mind and decided that chemical and environmental engineering was the right fit for me. I even applied to a few international universities for that major.
I was overjoyed when I received an offer from my first choice university HKUST, not only because it was an honour to attend this prestigious university but also because I now had the incredible opportunity to explore the various fields of engineering during my first year at UST through the multitude of engaging courses that are offered here. This university offered me the freedom to discover my true passions and allowed me to realise what I most enjoyed, leading me to choose Computer Engineering as my major. It feels a bit surreal imagining how different my future would have turned out if I could not study engineering here. I feel grateful that HKUST offered me the freedom to carve out my future and realise my true passions.
