Throughout the course of my engineering studies at HKUST, I have realized how much I enjoy the very philosophy and purpose of the engineering discipline. During my classes, I noticed how the techniques, theories and calculations within my civil engineering classes all have one common feature - they are all practical and application-forward. In studying every single topic, I can clearly envision how each can be directly applied to a real-life scenario -- to design or build or maintain structures that benefit others -- and this makes every lesson feel extremely meaningful. Engineering is all about applying knowledge to create positive changes in others’ lives, and I think I can constantly feel that in every branch, every topic of engineering.

At HKUST, there are many opportunities for students to join teams and societies that they are passionate about. I have always been interested in building bridges, to the point where I was initially inspired to become an engineer due to my passion for bridges. Thus, I joined HKUST’s Wu Zhi Qiao (Bridge to China) team, and was even promoted to a team leader. Working alongside other universities in Hong Kong and Mainland China, our team builds essential footbridges, additional engineering infrastructure and organizes community projects to improve the living conditions of villagers in rural China. Joining the WZQ team has been a very fruitful experience. I have witnessed how us engineers’ actions can directly impact the lives of its users, and this has given me even more drive and passion to pursue my career as a civil engineer.
