Before I decided to take Civil Engineering as my pathway, I was just a kid fascinated with all the infrastructures like roads and bridges in daily life. I didn’t have any dreams to pursue this field until a service trip to Ningxia in my early secondary education. We visited a farm that only had basic farming tools and another farm that used modern farming methods. The latter one clearly contrasted how pipelines and farming machines would take the farmers to live a better life. This made me realize how engineering can improve people’s work and hence their lives. Being touched by the impact of the infrastructures, I was determined to help those people in the undeveloped regions by playing a part in building them.
Studying as an undergraduate student in HKUST School of Engineering provides me with the opportunity to pursue my dream while maintaining reasonable work-life balance. SENG is a robust community that we can all engage in. With HKUST’s promising academic excellence and dynamic learning environment, I can meet and work with a myriad of diligent students who also have a passion for engineering. Our School also expands our knowledge by taking us beyond classroom settings to understand current real-world engineering problems. I really appreciate how SENG focuses on both developing our logical thinking and analytical skills while helping us to put our knowledge into practical use for the future. It is certainly a fruitful experience to learn here.
