Transforming imagination from virtual to reality - this is the power of engineering. Engineers not only love science and mathematics, but also enjoy solving real-life problems with this knowledge. From a drop of water to the internet, engineering shapes modern society and gives us a better environment to live in. I always knew many theories and weird mathematics symbols were involved in engineering, but I still chose it to be my bachelor’s degree because I wanted to have the same kind of power.

In the previous years studying Mechanical Engineering in HKUST, I had a lot of chances to work with students on projects and competitions. These hands-on experiences gave me chances to apply the knowledge learnt from lectures to physical prototypes. Although I faced many challenges, I learnt from the mistakes and felt rewarded every time I tackled a problem.

Currently, I am one of the members of the Electric Vehicle Racing Team. Being part of the first-year team to build a race car from scratch is not easy. However, I think a good engineer is always learning. Even if we only have limited resources, I still believe that I will learn a lot during the progress. In typical lectures, no one will teach us how to do woodwork or make a carbon fiber bodywork by ourselves. These experiences enrich my university life very much.

As an Engineering Student Ambassador, it is an invaluable chance for me to be connected with students from other disciplines and promote engineering together. I am glad to be a student of the School of Engineering and hope you enjoy living in this age we refer to as the “Century of Engineering” too.
