Chilam Yuk Tsun
When I was a little girl, I used to play near a river with a group of people. However, it was blocked one day because of serious water pollution. When I grew older, I discovered the problem came from a chemical factory built next to it. Therefore, I decided to study something that is related to this field. I would like to solve this problem, so children can play anywhere they want, especially getting close to nature. This is why I chose Chemical and Environmental Engineering as my major.
Studying at HKUST has given me a lot of chances to meet with international students. It may be because HKUST is the only university in Hong Kong which has a Chemical and Environmental Engineering department. I will always believe that only competition, diversity and disagreement can help improve logical thinking and idea brainstorming. While discussing a problem with other students, they may come up with some ideas or solution that I have never thought of. It really takes me to another level and helps me start thinking from other aspects.
Also, this department has provided plenty of chances to visit different kinds of factories and sites. Within two years, I have participated twice in a three-day tour. There are different factories every time and brand-new information we can receive to let us understand more about how the knowledge we learn can be applied in daily life and work. I think this is very meaningful since most of the students are actually quite confused about their career path.
