Everything you do at high-school prepares you for university and everything you do at university prepares you for life. The decisions along the way can ultimately change where you end up and so, are extremely daunting, the major question being, what should I study? The trick in making this decision is to take a course that you know you’ll enjoy because that is the best way of ensuring that you are motivated to succeed.

A year ago, when I was making this decision, I wrote down a list of all the things I enjoyed. Things like, learning about how a jet engine works, or how the hydraulic system in brakes work, or even how a steam engine is made more efficient, were all things that I found drew my interest. There is something truly exciting about learning how something works and then being able to see and apply this knowledge elsewhere. I decided to take Engineering, at HKUST in particular, for its general year offered and stunning campus. The general year helped me iron out any doubts I had about what I wanted to study, and I am now majoring in Mechanical Engineering.

It is impressive to look back upon all that I have learned within my first year. Even courses in branches of engineering where I did not think I would end up, like Industrial or Electronic Engineering, ended up being some of the most interesting courses I could have taken. It has also been exciting to meet the great community of engineering students we have at HKUST - all dedicated, intelligent, and passionate students, they are also a lot of fun to hang out with in a social setting.

Through joining the Engineering Student Ambassador Program, and attending the training camp, I have been able to forge close friendships with my fellow engineering students, friendships which I hope will last a lifetime. HKUST has contributed positively to my passion for engineering and I am very grateful for all the opportunities it has provided me to explore what I enjoy.
