It wasn’t until my last year of high school that I discovered what I really wanted to do as a major. I’d always been interested in researching why things worked the way they did; whether it be how a space telescope folded its mirrors up like origami or a bird’s beak inspired a bullet train. But I’d never put much thought into practically pursuing engineering until I realised how much technology can empower communities. Walking around campuses on open day gave me a chance to see student-led activities in action—from robots completing tasks to sustainable design projects. HKUST as a local hub that stood for an ethos of advancing knowledge with a positive impact on the community, was very much a place I could see myself attending.
Now, as a computer science student here, I can say that my initial impression has been confirmed. Going around campus, one can always see a new project or initiative being formed and supported by our community. It’s inspiring to see such action in the community, and always stimulates me to work harder on my own journey. Learning here has student-driven innovation at its core, whether in software like our indispensable campus apps or through collaborative research initiatives. This environment has transformed my fascination with how things work into a concrete passion for building solutions that matter. At HKUST, engineering is not just an academic discipline to be studied in isolation; it is a collaborative practice aimed at creating a better tomorrow, and I am thrilled to be a part of it.
