Biography

Biography

Prof Roger Cheng received the BS degree from Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA, in 1987, and both the MA and PhD degrees from Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, in 1988 and 1991, respectively, all in electrical engineering. From 1991 to 1995, he was an Assistant Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of University of Colorado at Boulder. In June 1995, he joined the Faculty of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), where he is currently a Professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE). From September 2008 to February 2010, he served as the Associate Head for Undergraduate Affairs in the Department of ECE. From February 2010 to June 2014, he served as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies and Student Affairs in the School of Engineering.

Professor Cheng co-authored over 150 papers and had over 25 patents filed or granted. He is a Fellow of IEEE and served as editors in several journals. He had served as Editor for the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS, the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, Guest Editor of the special issue on Multimedia Network Radios in the IEEE JOURNAL ON SELECTED AREAS IN COMMUNICATIONS, Associate Editor of the IEEE TRANSACTION ON SIGNAL PROCESSING, and the membership chair for the IEEE Information Theory Society.

He also held visiting positions with Qualcomm, San Diego, and Institute for Telecommunication Sciences, NTIA, Boulder, CO, in the summers. He was the Director of the Center for Wireless Information Technology at HKUST and the Associate Director for the Consumer Media Center at HKUST. He had also consulted with ASTRI and Motorola in Hong Kong, Maxlinear Inc. in San Diego and Huawei and ZTE in China. He was also one of the founders of Perception Digital Inc.

His current research interests are in wireless communications and networks including multiuser cooperative communications, MIMO, OFDM, Resource allocations, digital implementation of communication systems, information theory, and coding.
