Biography
Professor Ben Letaief received the BS degree with distinction, MS and PhD degrees from Purdue University, USA. From 1990 to 1993, he was a faculty member at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Since 1993, he has been working at HKUST where he is currently the New Bright Professor of Engineering and Chair Professor of Electronic and Computer Engineering.
Dr. Letaief has contributed to the advances of wireless technologies, including several major developments in OFDM, MIMO, and cooperative cooperation along with multiuser resource allocation, which are considered as the core technologies for 4G cellular systems and other advanced wireless networks. In his field, he has over 630 journals and conference papers and given invited keynote talks as well as courses all over the world. He has 15 patents, including 11 US inventions, and made 6 technical contributions to IEEE standards.
He is a Member of the United States National Academy of Engineering, Fellow of IEEE, Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, and Member of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences. He is also recognized by Thomson Reuters as an ISI Highly Cited Researcher and was listed among the 2020 world’s top 30 of AI 2000 Internet of Things Most Influential Scholars.
He is the recipient of many prestigious awards including IEEE Marconi Prize Award in Wireless Communications; IEEE Harold Sobol Award; Purdue University Outstanding Electrical and Computer Engineer Award; IEEE Signal Processing Society Young Author Best Paper Award; over 15 IEEE Best Paper Awards, and 6 Teaching Awards.
Dr. Letaief served in many leadership positions, including Dean of Engineering at HKUST, Provost at HBKU, Director of the Hong Kong Telecom Institute of Information Technology, Vice-President of IEEE Communications Society, and Founding Editor-in-Chief of the prestigious IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications. He served as the President of the IEEE Communications Society, the world's leading organization for communications professionals with headquarter in New York City and members in 162 countries. He has served as General/Technical Program Chair of IEEE flagship conferences.
