Personally, engineering brings me great satisfaction because it allows one to create something tangible, even if the initial result may not be perfect. Achieving a good outcome may take considerable time and effort, but at least you can see the entity you’ve started and have the opportunity and motivation to improve it as long as you remain passionate.

For instance, I am interested in human-computer interaction (HCI) and brain-computer interfaces (BCI). Thanks to the extensive research opportunities provided by HKUST, I have been able to engage in numerous research projects and explore my interests. In HCI, I’d like to highlight the programming aspect. For example, if you design a system to help students perform better in class, you can immediately see the effects of your code. If you’re passionate about the project, you can continuously improve your code by considering additional factors and developing your own ideas.

Similarly, with BCI, as soon as you wear non-invasive BCI equipment, you can observe your brain signals and experiment with them. This process is incredibly enjoyable for me, and I believe it’s this ability to see progress while pursuing something I’m genuinely passionate about that fuels my interest in engineering. It’s not only about personal growth but also about helping others.
