University is a place that encourages you to build on previously learnt skills from high school and turn that theoretical knowledge to real-world application, which is especially true for engineering given how all our modern technology relies on this discipline. Therefore, you need to choose the right university and major to suit your interests.

While deciding on which universities to apply for, I had the opportunity to either study abroad or in Hong Kong. After hours of research and talking to friends and family, I finally decided to study engineering at HKUST because of the general first year it offered, the high-end and sophisticated facilities, and the gorgeous campus and view.

After joining HKUST, my next key decision was deciding on a major. My first year helped me get a taste of the different engineering fields, and thankfully, HKUST’s School of Engineering’s (SENG) flexible course structure took some of the pressure off. This helped me to finally settle on Electronics Engineering (ELEC) as my major. The one thing I really appreciate about the SENG pathway is that it leaves some room to pursue courses outside your major. For example, if you are interested in psychology or behavioural sciences, you can take such courses from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and even declare it as a minor.

As part of the Engineering Student Ambassador (ESA) program, I had the opportunity to meet and befriend like-minded students from diverse backgrounds. Another highlight of the ESA is being able to build connections with professional engineers. It has also provided me with a platform where I can guide incoming students in SENG and help them with aspects of university life such as choosing the right courses, settling into dorms, and finding the best places to eat.

HKUST has positively influenced my passion for engineering, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities it has provided for me to explore what I enjoy. HKUST has an innovative atmosphere where you are encouraged to step outside your comfort zone and pursue your aspirations through trial and error.
