Biography

Biography

Prof. Chen received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the University of Missouri and his master’s and bachelor's degrees from Ningbo University. Before joining HKUST in 2021, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow and then a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri. Prof. Chen is interested in developing active metamaterials, a form of robotic structures implemented with sensing, actuating, and information processing components, to interact with their environment in a more functional, efficient, and sustainable way. He seeks to harvest new ways to design those materials using combined knowledge of geometry, mechanics, active materials, and information science. He also focuses on a fundamental understanding of their nonstandard mechanics and physics and is passionate about their engineering applications in nature.
