The sound of birds chirping, the scent of flowers seeping into my nose, and the touch of soft grasses brushing against my hands always comforted me. For years, nature has been my shelter in tough times, and I dreamed of becoming an ecologist one day, so that I could live with wild animals every day.

But a trip to Japan in high school completely changed my life. At Japan, I was able to build a music box and electronic guitar from scratch with Japanese engineering students. The immense satisfaction I got from learning engineering skills sparked a fire in me, and I instantly fell in love with engineering. That same year, a passion to battle climate change and transform our energy industry slowly stemmed from watching many documentaries on the dire consequences of the ignorance in global warming.

What gravitated me towards HKUST is not only the Sustainable Energy Engineering (SUSEE) program that provides unique learning opportunities for students who are interested in renewable energy, but it is also a powerful technology hub where different elites and prominent engineers from across the globe converge and create long-lasting impacts on the society. I especially appreciate the massive amount of effort put into nurturing students by imparting technical knowledge and improving their whole-person development.

I am blessed to have become an Engineering Student Ambassador and join diverse activities with other talented students. We morph our personalities together as life-long friends and learn crucial soft skills that will prepare us for our career. We are like young trees that are growing to become the canopy in a forest and contribute to the world. At the same time, we take care of the seedlings beneath us and be adolescents’ beacon of light in the dark.
