Selina Jane
Hi! I am Selina, a Civil and Environmental Engineering major who has just completed two wonderful years at HKUST. My mixed race face is quite the conversation starter as I was, in fact, born in Hong Kong to a British father and a Filipino mother with one younger sister. I have two mixed-breed dogs, pretty coincidental, and live on the beautiful, albeit very far from HKUST, Lamma Island.
I previously attended West Island School Hong Kong where the typical pathway is to take your studies further abroad. However, I am a family driven person and have created quite the life for myself here in Hong Kong and saw HKUST as the best choice to begin my journey into the life of engineering. My passion for engineering took inspiration from close adult figures in my life and was further cemented after taking part in an eye-opening summer internship in a local geotechnical firm. Being able to specialize into environmental engineering is what caught my eye about HKUST’s Civil Engineering program, since I am most excited to delve into this area in the future. I am an avid recycler and am working on trying to live, as close as I can to, a zero-waste life.
Despite being a ‘local non-local’ student who does not fluently speak Cantonese, I have fostered many close friendships during my time here through joining the University Netball Team and the School of Engineering’s Peer Mentoring Program. I try my best to juggle my work schedule as a part time netball coach and umpire with my new found role as an Engineering Student Ambassador (ESA). I am honored and humbled to have been selected to serve as an ESA and to promote the strengths and values of engineering to prospective students, parents and visitors to HKUST. I am excited to get this journey under way, meet new people and form new friendships with my fellow ESAs!
If you ever have any questions about engineering, civil engineering or life at HKUST in general, feel free to shoot me an email. See you on campus!
