Frequently Asked Questions

Internships in Shanghai

Who will arrange the internships in Shanghai for students?

The HKUST Shanghai Center actively facilitates internship placements for students on the program. We work closely with partner companies to match students with suitable positions, and all qualified students can expect to secure a placement through this network.

Can students arrange their own internships or complete them in cities other than Shanghai?

No. As part of the program curriculum, students are required to complete their internships in one of our partner companies in Shanghai. Students will be jointly supervised by an academic advisor and an industry supervisor from the host company to ensure the internship experience aligns with the program’s objectives.

Do you have a list of partner companies?

We currently work with over 50 partner companies such as ByteDance, Bank of China, Chery Automobile, Meituan, miHoYo, Microsoft Research Asia, Qualcomm, Sequoia Capital China, Tencent, etc. However, the specific companies vary each year. The confirmed list will be released to enrolled students before the start of the second semester.

What is the placement process?

During the first semester of Year 1, the HKUST Shanghai Center will arrange one-on-one meetings with students to discuss their experience and internship preferences. A list of partner companies and available positions will be released in the second semester. Students will indicate their preferences, and conditional internship offers are given by the end of the second semester in Year 1.

How many internship positions can students apply for?

Students may indicate up to three preferred positions. Partner companies will make the final decisions.

Are these internships paid?

Yes, all internships with our partner companies are paid positions. While compensation rates vary, all will meet the minimum wage requirements for internships in Shanghai.

Does the program provide accommodation in Shanghai?

The program offers accommodation options in Beiyang AI Innovation Town in Xuhui District for students to rent. Alternatively, students may choose to find their own accommodation.
