Jay Yu

Hello, I'm Wang Yu from the MAE department. Growing up in a small county, I’ve always been curious about life in big cities, and this is why I chose to come to Hong Kong for undergraduate studies. After getting a BSc degree in engineering physics and an MPhil degree in chemistry, I’ve enriched myself in materials science knowledge and decided to pursue a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at HKUST.

My research projects are focused on solid-state batteries, and I'm using computational methods to help design the electrolytes and the electrodes of the batteries. The computational methods are based on the first principle, the most basic quantum mechanics, which is deep physics. The purpose is to make energy storage batteries with greater energy density and more stability, which is of great industrial value. So, the workflow is a perfect combination of "science and technology". I always feel lucky and motivated studying in HKUST, for its state-of-the-art research facilities, stunning campus scenery and the kind professors and classmates.

Outside of my research interests, I am an active participant in university affairs, including organizing student activities and participating in university management meetings. I think that only by playing different roles and trying different types of work, one can better understand oneself-understand one's own abilities, understand one's own shortcomings, and understand what one really wants. HKUST provides us with many valuable opportunities to do so and ESA is one of them. I don't use a few vague keywords to define myself. I prefer to taste and fell more from real things and write my own stories. How about you?
