Gian Miguel Sero
Hey there! I'm Gian, a Computer Science major who was born in the Philippines, grew up in Hong Kong, and even spent some time in France during secondary school.
Some may ask why I chose to pursue computer science. Of course, like many people, part of my answer would be that programming is fun, and there are many hot, exciting developments in fields such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. The other part comes from a more personal reason. I have a particular interest in the computer vision field because I’ve had poor eyesight since I was born. Due to this, anything related to vision and images has been fascinating to me, and computer vision is about exactly that: one of its many goals is to be as good as human vision. While my vision isn’t that great to begin with, I aspire to contribute to this field, and it’s inspiring to see that HKUST has many students and professors actively researching on it.
I'm glad to be studying at HKUST, because it has provided me with a plethora of opportunities to push myself to improve and achieve greater things. For example, I was a member of the Robotics Team’s underwater division for two years, which gave me the chance to go to USA and compete with other university teams from around the world. There are also many great and wonderful people from many different backgrounds who all came to HKUST, and all of who I’ve been lucky to meet.
If you have any questions about computer science, engineering, HKUST, or Hong Kong in general, or if you just want someone to have an interesting conversation with, just send me an email, and I would be more than happy to talk with you!
