Unlike many engineering students, I was not determined to become an engineer. I have actually wandered between business and engineering before entering university. I thought I would not have enough ability to handle engineering courses because I did not perform well in subjects like math or physics during secondary school. But after joining the School of Engineering, things turned out to be very different from my expectations.
In my first year, I was able to get a taste of various courses from every department. Instead of learning pure theory, I was able to learn about what they can be applied to. I had the opportunities to explore and develop my own solutions. Many instructors encourage us to learn, think, and create by ourselves without restricting us with standard answers. If I am curious about some topics, I would look into them myself. These experiences aroused my interest in engineering and enhanced my ability of learning as well as thinking independently. Although I am still searching my way, I am confident to say I have never regretted joining the School of Engineering.
To me, among all the activities I have participated in, one of the most rewarding experiences is definitely joining the family of Engineering Student Ambassadors (ESAs). I met many Head ESAs and faculty whom are responsible and kind, and I really look up to them as role models. I met fellow students whom all have unique characteristics and talents of their own that I can learn from. ESA is a home. I am grateful for this chance to become a part of it.
