After I finished high school in Nepal, I came to Hong Kong to further my studies. I had to take a gap year after my high school because it took a really long time for my results to come out. During that year I was working full time as a bartender. After I got my results I tried applying in different universities and got rejected due to my education qualification from Nepal. I was really frustrated and was on the verge of giving up. My sister, however, did not give up on me. She took my documents and applied for the Associate Degree of Engineering Program at the City University of Hong Kong. This is where my engineering journey began.
I was fascinated with engineering since my childhood but realized my passion in computer engineering due to a special teacher whose name was Gareth. He was my favourite teacher and I learned a lot from him. The frustration that I had of not getting into a university, I channelled it towards my studies. I got a decent GPA and got offers from multiple universities. In the end, I chose the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
After joining HKUST, I got to experience practical as well as theoretical knowledge. I got selected as a Robotics Team member and I was using the things that I learned in class in real life. I also had the honor of becoming a student mentor and nurture young engineers. Their passion and interest reminded me of my very own roots.
My main goal for becoming an Engineering Student Ambassador is to help people with diverse education backgrounds like me. Although I had a hard time getting familiar with Hong Kong’s education system, I want to be there for people who need help so that I can make their lives easier.
