Before I entered HKUST School of Engineering, I thought that engineering was full of geeks and nerds. Now that I have survived through my first year, I can confidently tell you that... engineering is still full of geeks and nerds. But there is more to this story: when you become friends with them for a period of time, you will discover that they are sociable, friendly, very outgoing, and pour all their effort into pursuing their passion. The School of Engineering is a vibrant community of talented people.
It was a bold decision for me to choose engineering because I was studying in a traditional girls' school, and almost none of my friends had the same interest as me. It was quite lonely for me at that time because there was no one else to share your passion with. But here, I have met many girls who are of a similar age and also passionate about engineering, especially after joining the Engineering Student Ambassador (ESA) Program. The program is an excellent medium for all engineering students from different cultural and social backgrounds to meet one another and cooperate, and a perfect chance for me to open up and talk to other non-local students since it is quite rare to work together in other times. It really helps me to become more courageous, independent and mature.
Of course, what HKUST offers is not just limited to the ESA Program! There are many other activities like student societies, buddy programs, sports teams, but I find the ESA Program the most heart-warming. I am very sure that you will never regret your choice of studying at HKUST. And while you are here, don't forget to grab the chance of becoming an ESA!
