I have always prided myself on being decisive, whether it was about which flavor of ice cream I wanted as a child or which subjects I wanted to study for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP). Similarly, I was also certain about pursuing Chemical Engineering for my undergraduate studies. The idea of doing my part to protect the environment has always felt like my calling, and pursuing Chemical Engineering would allow me to work in the field of sustainable energy. In my first semester at HKUST, I took a course called ‘Biotechnology and its Business Opportunities’, where we learned about applications such as prosthetic limbs and genetically engineered cures. Suddenly, I found myself becoming increasingly fascinated by biotechnology and its business applications. For what felt like the first time, I was extremely confused about what I wanted to do.

Fortunately, HKUST provided me with the opportunity to explore sustainability as well as biotechnology. I was able to join the ‘Eco-Reps Program’, where students take up projects to make our campus more eco-friendly. I worked with my team to make a prototype of an aquaponics plant. In addition, I got the chance to be a research intern for one of my professors, where we worked on mimicking membrane-less organelles with the intent of understanding the mechanisms of diseases such as ALS and dementia. I have not made my decision yet, but I have recognized that whatever I choose to do, I want my work to benefit the world. I am grateful that HKUST shares a similar vision and has provided me with the best opportunities to explore my interests.

HKUST School of Engineering is the place for students to discover their passion. It has allowed me to further my curiosity and I endeavor to encourage students to join us and do the same!
