Dr. Jack Lau is the first PhD graduate of HKUST (1994). He became a tenured faculty member in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering and continues to serve as Adjunct Professor and Honorary University Fellow. He served on the HKUST Council, including as Vice-Chair of the Knowledge Transfer Committee and Chair of the Institutional Advancement & Outreach Committee, and was a founding member of the working group that initiated the HKUST (Guangzhou) campus. An entrepreneur and technology strategist, Dr. Lau founded Perception Digital—HKUST’s first spin-off to list on the Main Board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange—and is a named inventor on 20 U.S. patents and more than 45 patents worldwide, including HKUST’s first granted patent. His innovations span consumer electronics, artificial intelligence applications, and technology commercialization. From 2024 to May 2025, he served as President of Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP) and currently sits on the QSTP Board. He is also a Non-Executive Director of SUNeVision Holdings and a Board Member of the Ronald McDonald House for Children (RMHC). Currently, Dr. Lau serves as an Advisor to the President of HKUST (Guangzhou) and advises organizations in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Entrepreneurship. He previously served on the HKEX Listing Committee (2023–2024). Dr. Lau’s contributions have been recognized with the Ten Most Outstanding Young Persons in Hong Kong (香港十大傑出青年, 2000), the Young Industrialist Award of Hong Kong (香港青年工業家獎, 2005), and the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year China Award (安永中國企業家獎, 2009). He remains actively involved with HKUST through teaching, mentorship, and support for innovation and outreach programs. Outside of his professional work, Dr. Lau is passionate about golf, yoga, and cooking. His most enjoyable moments are those shared in laughter with good friends over a simple meal.
