Biography

Biography

Prof. Lakerveld is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. He received his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering from Delft University of Technology (TUD). His dissertation was on the design of solution crystallization processes. He was a postdoctoral associate at MIT where he worked on plant-wide control for continuous pharmaceutical manufacturing. Prof. Lakerveld was an Assistant Professor at TUD for two years before joining HKUST in 2014 as an Assistant Professor where he was promoted to Associate Professor with substantiation in 2020. He is an editorial board member of Chemical Engineering Research and Design (Elsevier). He received the 2018-19 School of Engineering Teaching Award for undergraduate teaching, and he is a member of the 2019 Class of Influential Researchers of the journal Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research. His research interests are in crystallization-based purification of small-molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients and therapeutic proteins. His long-term research aim is to make high-quality drugs better available and more affordable to patients through sustainable innovations in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals.
