28 IN FOCUS Alumni Going places Members of the rst cohort of Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education holders to graduate from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in 2016 are making their mark in careers across the world Chau Wing-In believes the project management and communication skills she gained through her Final Year Project were key factors in securing a job as a Rakuten producer and her new life in Japan. Japan E-commerce in Tokyo CHAU Wing-In has always been fascinated by Japan and was determined to visit the country a er learning in Year at HKUST that the University o ered many overseas student exchange opportunities. “When I nally went to Sophia University in Tokyo, I enjoyed life there very much,” she said. A er returning to HKUST to nish her degree, she later secured a job at Rakuten, Inc., a leading Japanese e-commerce and online retailer, through Career Mosaic, the University’s biannual recruitment fair. In , she moved to Tokyo as a Rakuten producer, handling project management, big data analysis, and modeling to enhance departmental performance. Although Wing had few problems settling in with her multinational teammates, she initially found it puzzling that in meetings, Japanese colleagues would never openly disagree with others. “A er the meeting, however, one by one they might come to me and share di erent views.” This, she now attributes to the Japanese approach to cross-cultural communication, and has adapted to it. Wing also still has one goal to ful ll, she said. To be able to speak Japanese like a native speaker!
