SENG Summer Camp for Elite Students 2018 Draws Top-Caliber Overseas and Mainland Participants

The School of Engineering (SENG) had the pleasure of hosting 67 top engineering students at bachelor’s or master’s level who demonstrate outstanding academic performance, research potential, and communication skills at the Summer Camp for Elite Students at HKUST on July 15-21, 2018. The students came from 13 different countries, namely the UK, US, Canada, France, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Ethiopia, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and China (including a selected group from Chu Kochen Honors College, Zhejiang University).

The participants went through a rigorous selection process to get into this exciting summer camp. Camp activities included leadership training sessions, research talks, industry visits, interactive activities as well as off-campus sight-seeing. They also had diverse opportunities to meet the School’s professors and visit their labs, enabling them to explore their own research interests. (Please find the program of the camp here.)

“SENG attracts top-quality students all year round, not just during the summer. Academic reputation is just one of the reasons why these students are choosing to come to the School,” said Prof Richard So, Associate Dean of Engineering (Research and Graduate Studies). As a young university with 27 years of history, HKUST was ranked No.17 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018: Engineering and Technology, and has been No.1 in Hong Kong since 2010 when this ranking was first published. The University was placed at No.18 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018 by Subject: Engineering and Technology. HKUST graduates were ranked No.12 in the world and No.1 in Greater China for employability.

Exceptionally qualified PhD applicants with excellent academic records may apply for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship awarded by the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong. Successful candidates will be awarded HK$301,200 (~USD 38,600), as well as a travel allowance of HK$12,600 (~USD1,600) per year, up to four years. On top of that, successful candidates will also receive an Excellent Research Award of HK$40,000 in their first year. The School of Engineering at HKUST has recruited the most Hong Kong PhD Fellows among all local engineering schools for the past nine years since the fellowship scheme was launched.
